Dengue Fever Threat Continues
The Niue Health Department has yesterday Thursday Niue time, confirmed one more case of the dreaded dengue fever. So far, a total of 7 people have been diagnosed with the virus. Earlier cases occurred in the village of Tuapa and subsequently Mutalau and now Namukulu. No cases have been reported in the southern villages of the island.
Dengue is carried by mosquitoes, principally Aedes aegypti. There is no known cure but treatment is available to treat the symptoms. The same type of mosquito is said to spread chikungunya and Zika fever. It is believed that dengue was unknown on the island until the advent of air travel.
The Health authorities have issued the usual caution and have urged all those who may be showing signs of the symptoms of dengue to report to the Hospital.
