Election 17 – Polls Have Closed

Fonuakula – Saturday 6:05pm Niue Standard Time

The polls have closed. After a week of frenzied activity an uncanny hush has descended over Nukututaha. Despite showery weather throughout the island today, indications are that there was a good turnout of voters. With an unprecedented 23 on the Common Roll, and 11 village seats, the interest in these elections is extremely high.

For the moment in the 14 polling booths scattered around the island, the polling clerks and their assistants begin the process of counting the votes. In some booths, there is a small crowd waiting for the results. The polling clerk inserts the key in the padlock and opens the ballot box. This is not Survivor Niue, where a mere $1m is at stake. This is Niue Elections 17, where the winners will have control over an island and millions of dollars; it’s time to count the votes.

Good luck to all the candidates of the Election #17
