Fishing Folks Celebrate
The Niue Island Fishermen’s Association has ended the year with a get-together at Clayton’s Bar on Thursday last week.
The major attraction for the evening was distribution of prizes for the fishing contest held during Constitution Celebration week in October. The fishing competition was in three categories – one for reef fishing, one for smaller boats up to 40hp and one for the larger boats for anything over 40hp.
The so called glamour prize for the big boats – the heaviest fish, went to Scan Misiepo for the second year in a row for his 12kg wahoo. The squally weather on the designated fishing day has been blamed for the poor catch rate with a good number of the smaller boats staying firmly on dry-land. The reef fishing had to be called off and was held a week later.
